From Kitchen Dutch to official language

A century ago, in May 1925, Afrikaans was legally recognised as an official language of South Africa. Tom McLachlan, a professional language practitioner, will briefly trace the politico-linguistic history of the events that led to this milestone. Since the term ‘official language’ is sometimes misunderstood, it will be defined, with reference to the current and previous Constitutions.
